Earlier this year, I had an opportunity to stop at Telford’s Pipe & Cigar in Mill Valley, California and meet Brian Telford, who started the business in 1970! The shop is a masterclass in the history of pipe tobacco and cigars in the United States for the last 100+ years.
It was truly a special day to get a few minutes to chat with Brian and listen to the history of Telford’s as well as the challenges of owning a tobacco retailer in California given the states aggressive regulation, as well as local county ordinances and regulations. Nevertheless, the shop is truly one-of-a-kind and is a must-visit if you are in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Telford’s stocks an impressive amount of inventory from in-house pipe tobacco blends to the largest names in the cigar industry. Fun fact: Telford’s was the first Davidoff appointed merchant in Northern California. Unfortunately, Telford’s does not have an e-commerce website, but if they have what you’re looking for, they can process your order over the phone and ship it directly to you.
I can’t thank Brian Telford enough; thank you for your time and allowing me to share your business with the world.
The Eladio Díaz 71 Aniversario Cigar is a special limited-edition release, crafted to honor the legendary blender Eladio Díaz on his 71st birthday. This premium cigar features an Ecuadorian Corojo ’99 wrapper, a rich Mexican San Andrés binder, and a unique filler blend of Dominican Corojo, Dominican Habano ’92, and barrel-aged Havana Vuelta Arriba (HVA) tobaccos. Hand-selected tobaccos from the regions of San Juan de la Maguana and Las Matas de Farfán in the Dominican Republic add a distinct character, drawing from their mineral-rich, high pH soils that contribute to the cigar’s strength and creamy texture. The cigar is presented in a refined Toro size, measuring 6 inches by a 54-ring gauge, and is limited to just 2,000 boxes of 10, making it a sought-after collector’s item. Its medium-to-full-bodied profile reveals flavors of subtle spice, dark cacao, black coffee, and a clean, woody finish, offering a rich and complex smoking experience worthy of its namesake. Priced at $25 per cigar, the 71 Aniversario delivers a nuanced, artisanal touch that reflects Díaz’s legacy and expertise in cigar crafting.
